Save your
old non-battery powered landline phone!
Because
of the popular and convenient cell phone, DSL and cable services many people
today don’t have the old hard wired landline phone in their homes. There is a need
for a hard wired system should cell and cable is taken out because of an act of
Mother Nature or man made disaster.
Living in
hurricane country I have lost cell service due to the high wind damage of the
cell towers. That is an eye opener when you have become complacent about
everyday non-interrupted conveniences like the cell phone, Sat TV and
electricity. The old telephone services are for the most part locally hard
wired and underground keeping them away from high wind damage etc.
Even if
you do not have a landline to your house there’s a good chance that one of your
neighbors do. Their phone service is normally begins with an outdoor
service/connection box that has a phone connection port inside that box. Remove
the cover screw and open the box, inside will be a port to simply plug in your old
landline phone into and now you have emergency phone service to call out from!
Just be sure your neighbor allows this in times of need or you can be arrested
for stealing their service.
This
phone is also good to have in your bug out bag or vehicle for emergency use.

The box
opened showing the connection ports. Choose the one that has wires going to it,
although if the first port you tried doesn’t have a dial tone then change to
another one until you find one that has a dial tone.

Good idea. One that I've abandoned for the sake of economy. In my rural area, the landlines are on the same poles as the power lines. Both services would go down at the same time. In an emergency, about the only thing here that works is 2 way radio. Down side to life in a remote area. -no cell phone service on a good day.
As six bears says, good idea.
Our land line became nearly unusable and the phone company wouldn't even come out to work on it. Kind of like living in the old soviet union as far as poor service. We got a wireless service for less money with free long distance. I know what you are saying but our phone company is worthless and couldn't be counted on in an emergency.
Great Info... thanks
We keep a similar looking princess-style phone near a phone jack for those times when we lose power which happens often enough during the winter around here.
Simply being able to telephone the power company to let them know the power is out is reason enough to keep an old-style phone around. Good info, Mike. Thanks!
Good thoughts on the subject. DH and I have had many conversations about doing away with our land line. Still have it, happy to say.
