Potato Growing

My opinion, potatoes are a survivalist's best friend. A potato crop offers tasty and very filling food and they are very easy to grow with various options for growing them such as; in stacked tires, plastic grow bags or in the ground.

In the near future, I’m afraid all of us will be gardening to supplement the meager offerings available at your local supermarket all due to any one of many possible disasters.

If you are growing hundreds of pounds each year or a few pounds as a hobby, which method produces the most pounds of potatoes per row? This video should answer the question, “Grow in the Ground or in Containers for the Best Yield”. The blog has shown about a 40% yield increase using buckets. Detailed instructions can be found at the below links.

From  the UK Blog:

“The Big Potato Experiment”:
This is the second year of the potato experiment finding out whether it is better to grow potatoes in the ground or potatoes in containers. The results for round 2 will make you consider how you will grow your potatoes in the future. Will it be in the ground? or in containers?

How to sow potatoes in containers for a great harvest in (2018)

  1. Our first year we planted 10 pounds of potatoes and harvested 120 pounds. Every year since I've barely gotten the same amount I've planted. That's been in the ground, so maybe I should try containers.

    1. Leigh,
I’ve grown potatoes in buckets before with OK success. I think it’s a good idea because you dump the contents and then you’re easily able to amend the soil with compost and reuse providing no fungus shows itself.
What I really like about this guy is he did an actual in-ground vs bucket growing to show the actual yields for each method.
The other thing I liked was how he sow’s the seeds, 4 to a bucket in two layers and fills the bucket to the top with soil. That means there is no hilling needed with his bucket method, I like that a lot.
I plan to give his method a try next season and see if it works.

    2. Also he noted that he bury's the bucket two inches in the ground so the roots can grow through the drains holes in the bottom of the bucket and travel into the soil.
