Today, I had a comment left by UnknownJuly 21, 2018 at 11:43 AM about her 100% failure rate using the new Ball “SureTight” Canning Lids on my post about the new SureTight Lids on June 20-2017. http://livingprepared.blogspot.com/2017/06/ball-canning-lids-improved.html#comment-form
I did some more research and found that Ball recommends their new band/lid tightening tool for their new “SureTight” lids. It is simply a pre-set torque wrench that assures the proper tightness or torque with an audible click sound when the bands/lids are properly tightened.
It does seem odd to me that when veteran canners all of a sudden have seal failures something else is wrong. Apparently, the new lids are very sensitive to the proper tightening/torque for a seal, so Ball made a special wrench to try and solve the issue.
Here is a link to the Ball Video showing the ‘correct way’ to use the wrench. (I viewed 6 other private videos and of the 6, none of them used the wrench the proper way).

Watch and learn how the Ball® Sure Tight™ Band Tool secures jar bands with just the right amount of torque! This tool helps take the guess work out of securing the band to "fingertip tight". Arthritic canners may also find this to be a helpful tool. Learn more here: http://bit.ly/Jwx3AX

Another reason not to buy expensive ball lids as I have no failures with the off brand ones and don't need to use a torque wrench.
ReplyDeletesf,
ReplyDeletethanks for your info. i've never used other brands.
i bought one of those wrenches but haven't used it yet due to medical issues the last couple of years.
also i read that using 2 lids ensures the sealing, and when the jars cool the top lid is removed and then used again as top lid or next batch. cannot use it as main lid anymore but always to ensure good seal. that was without a wrench.
if off brand lids work fine there is no need to double lid.
seems they are all making lids cheaply and more canning failures in recent years.
almost seems like a plot to discourage self sufficiency.
p.s.- if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
ReplyDeleteMy wife and I made an attempt to get proficient at canning. Our county has a brand new cannery, top of the line, open to residents. You just bring the things you want to can and everything you need is there. Complete with high school girls from the home economics class to help you during the school year, and senior volunteers in summer. But our gardening efforts were not very successful, and we found out it was actually cheaper for us to just buy canned food at the grocery store. People who had big, successful gardens did much better, of course.
ReplyDeleteSo now you need a wrench to make sure your lids are tight??? Maybe we should send a few truck loads to all the Liberals so they don't pop their lids under pressure...:)
